Dual Toroidal Power Transformers

PrimaLuna uses two massive, potted toroidal power transformers to minimise magnetic and acoustic noise. Each transformer is enclosed in metal and sealed in non-microphonic resin to reduce vibration and protect its windings from moisture and deterioration. This substantial construction contributes to the preamplifier’s 31-pound weight.

Dual-Mono Tube Rectification

Two 5AR4 rectifier tubes are used in a dual-mono configuration to provide quiet, all-tube power regulation. This design lowers the noise floor while creating a natural, textured presentation with impressive depth and dimensionality.

Japanese Alps Blue Velvet Potentiometer

Rather than using a digital volume-control chip, PrimaLuna uses the renowned motorised Alps Blue Velvet analogue potentiometer. Its precise channel tracking and quiet operation preserve a smooth, natural signal without adding an artificial electronic character.

SuperQuiet Line Inputs

Premium sealed relays are positioned close to the rear-panel inputs to create an exceptionally short signal path. Only the selected input relay closes, while the others remain open to prevent unwanted signals and noise from entering the audio path.

Point-to-Point Wiring

The entire signal path, including its resistors and capacitors, is meticulously hand-wired by skilled craftspeople using heavy-gauge cable. This point-to-point construction avoids the thin copper traces commonly used on circuit boards and provides direct, durable connections between components.

No Internal DAC or Phono Stage

PrimaLuna keeps rapidly changing digital technology and specialised phono circuitry outside the preamplifier. This allows you to select a separate DAC or phono stage that suits your source equipment, cartridge and budget while helping the preamplifier remain relevant for years to come.

Dual-Mono Design

Each audio channel uses its own power transformer, regulation circuitry and signal path, effectively placing two discrete preamplifiers inside one chassis. This separation improves channel isolation, stereo imaging and the overall sense of space.

SmartGain Design

With a carefully selected gain of 10.8 dB, SmartGain provides the amplification most systems need without introducing unnecessary noise. The lower gain also reduces the audible effects of imperfect or microphonic tubes, making it especially well suited to high-efficiency loudspeakers.

PerfectMatch

PrimaLuna’s PerfectMatch circuit presents a consistent 100k-ohm input impedance to connected source components. This helps compatible DACs, phono stages and other sources—particularly tube-based models—perform at their best.
