All-Tube, Output Transformer-Coupled Headphone Amplifier

PrimaLuna uses its main tube amplification circuit rather than a conventional solid-state op-amp to power headphones. A voltage-divider network provides the appropriate output for models ranging from Sennheiser dynamic headphones to power-hungry Audeze and HiFiMAN planar designs.

 

Triode or Ultra-Linear Headphone Listening

Choose the warmth and fullness of Triode operation or the wider bandwidth, greater extension and increased power of Ultra-Linear mode. Switching is available directly from the supplied remote, allowing instant comparisons while the music continues.

 

Bad Tube Indicator

If a tube fails, Adaptive AutoBias immediately places the amplifier into protection mode to help prevent damage. A red LED identifies the tube requiring replacement, making maintenance quick and straightforward.

 

Transformer-Coupled Subwoofer Output

The EVO 300 and EVO 400 integrated amplifiers feature a transformer-coupled subwoofer output that can be switched between stereo and mono. Taking its signal from the speaker outputs helps the subwoofer and main speakers share the same sonic character for cohesive integration and strong dynamics.

 

Custom Toroidal Power Transformer

PrimaLuna uses a massive, custom-made toroidal power transformer to minimise magnetic interference, vibration and acoustic noise. Its metal enclosure and non-microphonic resin protect the windings from moisture and deterioration while preserving musical detail.

 

Custom Wide-Bandwidth Output Transformers

PrimaLuna’s output transformers are custom-designed and wound in-house to provide extended bass, open high frequencies and powerful, controlled sound. Their wide bandwidth allows the amplifier to prioritise sound quality while operating its tubes conservatively.

 

AC Offset Killer

PrimaLuna’s AC Offset Killer reduces transformer noise caused by irregularities in the mains supply. The resulting quieter background helps reveal greater space, texture and natural decay throughout the music.

 

Adaptive AutoBias

Adaptive AutoBias continuously monitors the output tubes and makes seamless adjustments in real time. The passive circuit sits outside the signal path, reduces distortion at higher listening levels and helps extend tube life while requiring minimal maintenance.

 

Extensive Tube Compatibility

A fine-tuning switch optimises operation for EL34- and KT88-family tubes. Compatible options include 6L6G, 6L6GC, 7581A, EL34, EL37, 6550, KT66, KT77, KT88, KT90, KT120 and KT150, allowing you to tailor the amplifier’s character to your system and preferences.

 

Point-to-Point Wiring

The complete signal path is meticulously hand-wired by skilled craftspeople using heavy-gauge cable. EVO 300 and EVO 400 models also use Swiss-made, silver-plated OCC copper wire with a Teflon dielectric in critical signal-path locations.

 

Premium Takman Resistors

Japanese-made Takman resistors are selected for their low noise, linearity and musical performance. These premium components form part of PrimaLuna’s uncompromising approach to construction and sound quality.

 

SuperQuiet Line Inputs

Premium sealed relays are positioned close to the rear-panel inputs to keep the signal path exceptionally short. Only the selected input closes, while the others remain isolated to prevent unwanted signals and noise from entering the audio path.

 

No Internal DAC or Phono Stage

Keeping rapidly changing digital technology and specialised phono circuitry outside the amplifier allows you to choose components that suit your sources, cartridge and budget. This modular approach also helps the amplifier remain relevant for years to come.

 

SmartWatts for Extended Tube Life

PrimaLuna operates its output tubes at carefully controlled plate and screen voltages, using the minimum practical dissipation without introducing crossover distortion. This reduces stress on the tubes, supports longer operating life and maintains excellent sound quality.
